Family, friends and community members gathered at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center to celebrate Armed Forces Day.
The ceremony, which was started in 1980, honors both veterans and active duty service members from all branches of the military. The event encouraged those in the crowd to give thanks to those who have, or still are serving the country.
"I think today is special because it really gives us, the Armed Forces in general a way to come together. Because we are brothers and sisters in blood and all of that and it really brings the community together as well,” Sgt. Sydney Diederich said.
In addition to a keynote address, the event featured the Avenue of Flags, where representatives of all service branches lined the veteran's hospital with American flags.
