For the next two weeks, the Sioux Falls Police Department and Sioux Falls Fire Rescue go head-to-head collecting blood donations in the annual “Heroes Behind The Badges Blood Drive.” Rita Nelson with the Community Blood Bank says this drive saves lives.
"We need blood everyday," Nelson said.
Every unit of blood collected goes to a good cause, but the Blood Bank says this time of year they tend to run short.
"During the holidays we tend to forget that we have patients in the hospital, we have car accidents, we have cancer patients, and surgical patients that need blood everyday," Nelson said.
The Bank uses approximately 550 units of blood each week that go to area hospitals and different health care organization.
Nick Luther protects lives as a member of Sioux Falls Fire Rescue, but now he is saving lives by being a blood donator.
"It's such a good thing. So many people have had their lives saved from people voluntarily donating blood," Luther said.
It may be a small act but a huge help to people across KELOLAND.
"It's just a fun thing to see the community come together and donate to our patients," Nelson said.
“Heroes Behind The Badges” runs until January 3. Donors can go to the donor rooms at Sanford Medical Center or Avera McKennan Hospital or various blood drives held by each department.
