Members of a South Dakota committee tasked with studying child sex abuse in in the state say the issue is more prevalent than most of the public often believes.
Jolene's Task Force met for its first time Tuesday at the state capitol. The task force is made up of legislators, child sex abuse experts and other state officials.
An estimated 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are victims of sexual abuse nationwide.
Task force member and special agent Cam Corey specializes in sexual assault investigations. Corey says he hopes the committee's work can raise awareness of the issue.
Corey says members of the public don't often believe child sexual abuse happens in South Dakota.
