The woman accused of running over South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Andrew Steen in October 2012 is scheduled to plead guilty Friday afternoon.
The court calendar for Friday shows a change of plea hearing set for 26-year-old Rachel Coleman at 1:30 p.m. at the Minnehaha County Courthouse. Coleman is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, vehicular battery, DWI, and aggravated eluding.
According to investigators, Trooper Steen tried to pull Coleman over in the early morning hours of October 17, 2012 but she led authorities on a pursuit through southern Sioux Falls for about 20 minutes. The pursuit ended in the parking lot of the shopping center near 57th Street and Western Avenue where Steen got out of his vehicle to try and stop Coleman but according to court documents, she accelerated and ran him over.
Steen was hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury for nearly two months. Steen went back to work for the South Dakota Highway Patrol last summer to conduct computer work and light duty tasks. The American Association of State Troopers also presented him with the Trooper of the Year Award in May.
