Coldest Temps Of Winter In The Next Few Days

SIOUX FALLS, SD -
First it was freezing rain; now blowing snow is drifting over roads for drivers. But a real taste of winter is settling in for the rest of the week.
South Dakota winter temperatures can really be on both sides of the spectrum this time of year. Many people talk about January thaws and we often do see a warmer period during the month. However, historically our coldest temperatures of the year also happen in January and the next several days of this week will likely be the coldest of the season for much of KELOLAND.
The extended forecast for Aberdeen and Sioux Falls from Tuesday through Saturday shows our average temperature sitting just above and below zero for several days this week. When you take the total average, you get 2 degrees in Sioux Falls and -2 degrees below zero in Aberdeen. To put that into perspective, our coldest five-day stretch in 2010 had Sioux Falls at -5.2 degrees below zero and -7.2 degrees below zero in Sioux Falls and Aberdeen in early January.
While there is no thaw in sight, it does look like temperatures will start to warm up by this weekend. Of course, there is no guarantee that this will be the coldest week, but we sure hope that it is.
