Cold Winds Follow Weekend Storm

November 8, 2012, 5:20 PM by Ben Cathey

Cold Winds Follow Weekend Storm

We've seen a mild setup with light winds and blue skies.

A pattern change will bring an active weekend of high winds and a wintry mix starting with rain and leading to snow.  As the system moves past KELOLAND and towards the Great Lakes, we'll await a drastic drop in temperature.

A major winter storm is on the way to parts of Montana and North Dakota.

Though South Dakota will get a little relief from the drought, the bulk of the action will be to our north.  With Arctic air blowing over that snow, temperatures in KELOLAND will also cool off, bringing our own snow chance. That should draw the snow-line closer to the South Dakota border.

With the system, we'll only get a fixed amount of moisture and the longer the rain lasts, the less snow we get.

Central South Dakota is in line for an additional mix of freezing rain and sleet.  Once the bitter air moves south, we'll have clear nights. That will cause morning temperatures to plummet close to single digits.
