Cold Temperatures Cause USD Water Pipe Break

Cold Temperatures Cause USD Water Pipe Break
VERMILLION, SD -

More than 500 students evacuated from a residence hall on the University of South Dakota campus late Monday night got back in Tuesday morning to gather some belongings.

A frozen water pipe broke around 11 p.m. at the Coyote Village on the northern part of campus.

Officials were forced to shut off both the water and power in the dorm until they can make repairs.  Students were allowed back inside to collect some clothing because they will not be allowed back in Tuesday night.

USD spokeswoman Tena Haraldson says crews cleaned up the water in Coyote Village, but the broken pipe was over an electrical room and crews are trying to get the necessary parts to restore power.

Haraldson says the university will provide food at the hotels Tuesday evening and a shuttle to get students to their classes. The displaced students were excused from classes Tuesday.

The Coyote Village can house up to 550 students and opened in the fall of 2010.

We'll continue to bring you updates on the status of the repairs on KELOLAND News and KELOLAND.com.
