While a warm up is on the way, you can expect to see more bouts of cold air in the coming weeks.
Some still might remember the cold blast we had at the beginning of January when Sioux Falls only had a high of eight below on January 6. It went in the books as the third coldest high on that date. A similar thing happened in 2010 when Sioux Falls had a high of only five below on January 8; that's the second coldest high for that date.
That year also set some records for cold with lows falling to the 20s below zero during January. Sioux Falls even fell to 30 below on January 2 that year. While Sioux Falls hasn't been that cold, we've had lows in the upper teens below zero.
It's interesting to know when spring came in 2010, some of the cold air stayed. Sioux Falls recorded its third coldest high for the date of May 11 that year with a high of 46. It had its second coldest low for the date of May 9 with 28 degrees.
Overall, the temperatures were just slightly below average for highs and lows in May 2010, but don't be surprised it we get some hits of cold air this May.
