Clinton Man Accused Of Setting Fire In Apartment

June 6, 2014, 8:40 AM

A 30-year-old Clinton man has been accused of setting a fire that his mother put out in their apartment.

Rex Brandt is charged with felony arson. Clinton County Jail records said Brandt remained in custody on Friday. His attorney declined to comment.

Court documents say Brandt's mother told police that she lives with her son but that she kicked him out of their apartment Saturday night after an argument. The documents say Brandt acknowledged lighting the sleeve of a shirt sitting atop a dresser in his bedroom in order to "get back at his mom." He said he thought he put it out before leaving.

The mother, Mary Brandt, told investigators that she discovered the fire and used several glasses of water to extinguish it.
