The South Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol is conducting a statewide search-and-rescue training exercise.
Personnel, vehicles and aircraft are gathering Saturday at their units' headquarters. The exercise is designed to train mission support staff in organizing, planning and controlling an emergency mission, train aircrews in aerial observation techniques, and train ground search teams. Officials say an emphasis will be placed on communications and the documentation of mission activities.
The South Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol has squadrons in Sioux Falls, Brookings, Rapid City, Pierre, Custer and Spearfish, with about 300 officers and cadets and six light aircraft. It helps government agencies with search and rescue, homeland security, disaster relief, humanitarian assistance and counter-drug missions.
