City Job Fair Creates Connections

June 2, 2014, 6:00 PM by Kathleen Serie

City Job Fair Creates Connections
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The City of Sioux Falls has gotten into the job fair game, with its first ever event connecting citizens to what could be their new career.

The City of Sioux Falls has a full-time work force of over 1,000 and is looking to fill several positions.

"We have three full-time openings right now.  Two of them are in public works and one is in health, and so really, just depending on what their qualifications are. We don't have any professional level positions open today, but that could change, you know, in the next few days. We have positions that just come open all the time,” City of Sioux Falls Human Resources Manager Jane Hannestad said.

People at the job fair were able to apply for full-time positions online and fill out paper applications for part-time employment, all while meeting workers with city departments such as Human Resources, Parks and Recreation, and Fire Rescue.

"It's really exciting to have this kind of energy in the room I guess, and just to kind of break down the barrier that it's not that hard to work for the City of Sioux Falls.  That we do attract good candidates here," Hannestad said.

With a number of city representatives present at the job fair, individuals had the opportunity to connect and network with a variety of people.

Kimberly Labat isn't from Sioux Falls, but used this event to look into careers the city has to offer.

"I kind of used it as a networking opportunity today just because a lot of the positions that I would be interested in eventually getting into aren't open at this very moment. But it's really great just to get an idea of what they're looking for, different positions and different opportunities that may become available in the future,” Labat said.

A future that might land her at City Hall.

The City of Sioux Falls is one of the top 10 largest employers in town with more than 260 different types of positions in 12 different departments.
