City Council Rejects Plans For Third SF Walmart

May 1, 2012, 10:17 PM by Kelly Bartnick

City Council Rejects Plans For Third SF Walmart
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The Sioux Falls City Council rejected zoning changes requested by discount retailer Walmart Tuesday night. In a 1-7 vote, the city council turned down a proposal at 69th Street and Cliff Avenue in Sioux Falls.

Walmart wants to build its third Sioux Falls store at the intersection near Sioux Falls Christian School. It requested a zoning change on 3.6 acres at the intersection.

Neighborhoods in the area have fiercely fought the retailer's plans. Debate and testimony went on for two hours Tuesday night. At issue was the question of whether the land's zoning was an appropriate use. The Sioux Falls Planning Commission had previously approved the change.

But fringe issues such as store size, traffic, and pollution all came to the surface. Walmart officials argued the company would be a good neighbor. But residents of the neighborhood and the city council ultimately agreed that the land at 69th and Cliff in south Sioux Falls is not big enough to support the big box retailer.

The city council's rejection doesn't kill plans for the retailer altogether. Officials could still come back with a new plan and ask for a special permit. Several councilors said they want the retailer in south Sioux Falls, and have asked Walmart officials to consider other locations.
