City Bans May Prompt SD Ban On Texting And Driving

City Bans May Prompt SD Ban On Texting And Driving
PIERRE, SD -

The South Dakota Legislature has repeatedly refused to ban texting while driving, but bans imposed by four cities might prompt lawmakers to look more favorably on the idea.

State Sen. Mike Vehle of Mitchell says he plans once again to introduce a texting ban in the legislative session that opens Tuesday. He says lawmakers who have been undecided on the issue might decide to support a statewide ban now that Sioux Falls, Brookings, Watertown and Huron have passed their own bans.

Vehle says texting needs to be banned statewide so the law is the same in every community.

Legislative leaders say they aren't sure lawmakers are ready to ban texting while driving.

At least 39 states and the District of Columbia have banned texting while driving.
