City Auction Brings Thousands Of Bidders

September 15, 2012, 10:00 PM by Hailey Higgins

City Auction Brings Thousands Of Bidders
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Unclaimed stolen items from police lockers are the biggest hit at the surplus auction Saturday, as nearly 400 bid for a steal of a deal at the City of Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County’s version of a garage sale.

Electronics, cameras, TVs and everything else imaginable are sold to the highest bidder. Craig Stinger hopes to be one of them.

"We just like going to auctions, seeing if we happen to get a good deal on anything. Looking for tools or if we happen to find something that is of an interest to us," Stinger said.

Bob Himrich is calling this auction. He says the vast variety of items brings people from the farm and beyond.

"The stuff inside here is mostly the city people that want computers. There's monitors, cameras, all the small stuff," Himrich said.

"Last year I bought two leather coats for $50 each," Vadim Schevechuk said. "So that was a good deal."

The bargains are good if you can get them. One man bought at portable DVD player valued over $140 for just $27. However, experienced bidders do have some words of advice.

"Don't get caught up in the bidding," Stinger said. "I'm always surprised on the amount of people who pay more than what you can go to the store and get it for. We're looking for deals; otherwise you don't go to an auction."

Last year, the auction took in more than $217,000.
