Cholesterol Levels Improving

October 16, 2012, 3:57 PM by Jaine Andrews

Cholesterol Levels Improving
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

If you are among the many who have been diagnosed with high cholesterol, we've got some good news for you.  A new report from the Centers for Disease Control says more people are winning the fight against the fat in their blood.

High levels of LDL and total cholesterol, coupled with low levels of HDL cholesterol are major risk factors for heart disease. Researchers tracked levels over a 22-year period and looked at 40,000 surveys. The results show the average total cholesterol and levels of LDL or "bad" cholesterol both dropped, while levels of HDL or "good" cholesterol improved slightly.
Doctors credit lifestyle changes and cholesterol lowering drugs.

"I think it's good news in the sense that with everything else we're seeing change, more people being overweight, less active, an increase in diabetes, at least this is a factor related to heart disease that seems to be going down," Cardiologist, Dr. David Frid said.

You'll find the complete findings in this month's journal of the American Medical Association.
