Chief: Fire Crews Fought To Get Inside Home

Chief: Fire Crews Fought To Get Inside Home
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Three children are dead and two adults hospitalized after a fire tore through a home in northern Sioux Falls.

The fire ripped through the home on 1100 North Main Saturday around 8 a.m.

According to authorities and witnesses at the scene, two adults were taken to the hospital on stretchers.

Fire Rescue Chief Jim Sideras says the three children were found on the second story inside the home. And neighbors say the youngest child was in elementary school.

Fire and rescues crews and paramedics from across Sioux Falls were on scene for several hours. Sioux Falls Police, even an animal control officer were out blocking nearby streets.

According to the fire chief, when firefighters arrived on the scene, the home was already engulfed and flames were shooting out of the west side of the home.

Chief Sideras says firefighters fought to get into the home, but were stopped due to the high heat coming from the blaze.

"It's very frustrating and that's why we have our fire chaplin here, our employee assistance will be contacted, just because they can't do it. It's a pretty helpless feeling when you're here and your trying to get in to save people," Sideras said.

The conditions of the two adults and their names have not been released at this time.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:
The location of the home was corrected to North Main, not South Main.
