CFB: Starr Will Play In The Shrine Game
VERMILLION, SD -

South Dakota senior linebacker Tyler Starr has accepted an invitation to play in the 89th East-West Shrine Game to be held at 4 p.m. Jan. 18 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The game will be televised live on the NFL Network. The Shrine Game is the longest running college all-star game in the country.

“I am honored to be selected to play in this game and to represent the University of South Dakota,” said Starr. “It is really a week-long event that allows us to showcase our talents through practices and provides us the opportunity to visit and support kids at Shriners Hospitals for Children. I am looking forward to it.”

In addition to serving as one of the NFL’s primary sources for eligible players, the Shrine Game benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children, and helps support its mission of providing expert care to children in need, conducting innovative research and offering educational opportunities to medical professionals.

Starr, a native of Little Rock, Iowa, is one of seven linebackers on the West Team, which has won the last two Shrine Games. Three other Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) players are featured on the rosters, including defensive back Marcus Williams from North Dakota State (West) and offensive linemen Chris Elkins and Kyle Bryant from Youngstown State (East).

Romeo Crennel, a former head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, will coach the West Team for the second time since 2010. Jerry Glanville, a former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons and Houston Oilers is coaching the East Team for the second consecutive season.

Starr was named MVFC Defensive Player of the Year and finished ninth in the balloting for the Buck Buchanan Award for the top defensive player in the FCS. He has appeared on numerous All-America teams in recent weeks after finishing a three-year career at USD in which he accumulated 196 tackles, including a program record 27 sacks and 13 forced fumbles.
