Every year college football teams across the state and country get excited about a big recruit joining their program. After finishing 2-9 a season ago you may think it would be hard for Dakota State to land that big name. However this year's class is packed with big names.
"Quite honestly we start in Madison and work our way out. We want to recruit local kids," DSU Head Coach Josh Anderson said.
And the Trojans have hit the jackpot with this year’s local talent. For head coach Josh Anderson he says the kids do most of the recruiting for him.
"They seem to be recruiting each other. It makes life easier for me when I go to recruit a kid I can talk to some of the kids we already have on the team and have them recruit as well. It has been really beneficial to continue to get area kids, to help get area kids," Anderson said.
A few big names in this year’s class are Canistota's Cody Bunger, Harrisburg's Andrew McCuen, Flandreau's Jacob Patterson, and Tyler Gerdes of Viborg-Hurley. These players all took part in the South Dakota All-Star game which is where the plan to come together in Madison was born.
"We were all at the All-Star game in Aberdeen and we were trying to tell each other to go to DSU. We all know each other well and it has been fun already. I already love it here," DSU Freshman Wide Receiver Tyler Gerdes said.
Many of these high school stars are contributing on the practice squad or red shirting. However the upper classmen know what they have carrying the torch behind them and have high expectations for the Trojan nation's future.
"They are all looking good and working hard. I'm excited to see what the coaching here is going to do for them. I have big plans for all of them," DSU Senior Defensive Tackle Ronnie Jorgenson said.
"I have high expectations for our freshman class. We have quite a few good athletes coming in this year and if we continue to work hard there is nothing we can't achieve," DSU Freshman Safety Cody Bunger said.
The Trojans will be led into the new North Star Conference by fifth year senior quarterback Cole Whisenhunt. They will travel to take on Peru St. This Saturday to kickoff their 2013 season.
