SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Augustana kicked off their 2013 campaign with a bang by dropping MSU-Moorhead 41-28. The new look Vikings got down 7 to 3 before going on a 38 to nothing run heading into the locker room. It's no wonder they are buying into their new ball coach's system.
"It's a one week season. Our motto this year is 1-0," Augie Head Coach Jerry Olszewski said.
And that week one win was a convincing one too. Not only did the Vikings enter the season with a new coach, but a new quarterback too. Trey Heid won the job in camp and didn't play like it was his first collegiate game either. He combined for 266 yards and two touchdowns in his debut.
"It was fun to finally get out there and play at this stadium. I've been here for a year waiting to play, because I red shirted last year. It was fun to get out there and make some plays with the guys. It was my first time seeing live action. I hadn't really been in hit in nine months. It was a lot of fun," Augie Quarterback Trey Heid said.
Fun wasn't a word that described Augie's 2012 season. Now with a new coaching staff the players are noticing a difference already.
"You can really tell there is a difference, or at least I can from being here last year and experiencing both coaching staffs. There is a different feeling," Heid said.
"I thought he did great. He put us in really good situations. He pretty much knew what they were going to do. We had a good game plan going into it, we followed the script, and it worked really well. We were always in a good situation to be successful, so he did a good job," Augie Running Back Dajon Newell said.
Coach O.J. changed the culture in a matter of months on campus. Now that he has proven his style of play is a successful one he can’t help but get excited for what's ahead.
"I'm excited for the future. We're laying some foundation for some really good stuff. The kids couldn't have sold out more, they're buying in. Augie football is going to be back. It's going to be a fun time to watch us grow, " Olszewski said.
The Vikings will look to skin the Beavers in Minot this Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6:00.
