Centerville Road Closures Lead To Driver Confusion

June 25, 2014, 5:55 PM by Jared Ransom

Centerville Road Closures Lead To Driver Confusion
CENTERVILLE, SD -

If you use Google Maps to get from Beresford to Irene, you're going to get rerouted and probably more than once. People who live in the area have become expert navigators, guiding lost drivers to their destination.

Dawn Hawes is laughing about the big catfish she caught Wednesday from the Vermillion River, but she wasn't sure this fishing trip would even happen.

"The fishing is good right now. We were worried it would be too high and we couldn't get out here because of the roads being closed because they just opened 19 yesterday." Hawes said.

While fishing, Hawes and her friends give directions to lost drivers.  You can't go north toward Sioux Falls from the fishing spot and you can't go east, so drivers had to turn around and go back the way they came. The sign at the Centerville corner says two miles to town, but it's more like ten with the detour.

"We still have a lot of out of towners coming through with all the detours. They get directed to here and from here they're trying to get to Wagner or Yankton. We're still trying to give directions and get people to where they need to be."   Centerville store clerk Ashley Collins said.

People like this:

Driver: To get to Irene you want to take 19A right here. So I just go straight west?
Ashley: Yes, go six miles to the stop sign, take a left.
Driver: And then you want to go left?
Ashley: Yes, you go it.
Driver: Thank you.
Ashley: You're welcome. Nice, that was typical.

Collins has gotten good at giving directions out of Centerville, but she says it was really crazy last week during the height of the flood.

"You were stuck. I told everyone to make a friend and go sleep on their couch. All of the roads were closed." Collins said.

While some roads have reopened, there are plenty more which remain closed, forcing drivers to turn around. The State is making repairs as quickly as possible, but even that depends on the weather.

The State DOT website says officials hope to reopen highway 46 and 19A at the Centerville corner within a week.
