Celebrating Memorial Day

May 23, 2014, 8:30 AM by Brittany Larson

Celebrating Memorial Day
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

It's finally Friday and many people are expected to pack up their car and hit the road for the three-day weekend. An estimated 36 million Americans will be traveling.

Around 105,000 South Dakotas are expected to travel at least 50 miles this holiday weekend.

This Memorial Day, Danielle Claypool will be making a visit to honor her friend.

"So my friend Mike he was a Corporal Marine Corps. He died in Afghanistan in 2011 and his grave site in Fort Snelling. So I am going to so I am going to spend Memorial Day and take flowers up to his grave and try to connect with some family and friends that were also close to him," Claypool said.

She says it will be a day to remember his service and sacrifice.

"I celebrate Memorial Day for the actual meaning of Memorial Day it's the day to remember our troops and their sacrifice and celebrate what they do for us. Mike is definitely is symbolic of that for me because he did go there and he did die for us," Claypool said.

It's expected that more than 100,000 travelers will be driving at least 50 miles.

"The great thing about this year over last year is that we are paying 43 cents less for a gallon of gas… this year as we did last year so it's a big savings," Marilyn Buskohl of AAA said.

Gas prices could be another reason why there are more travelers in South Dakota leaving town.

"Gas prices, the weather and the economy areimproving and unemployment is lower than it has been," Buskohl said. "So I think all those factors play a part in it. But I think this is the first hurrah for the summer and everyone is just anxious to get out there and have some fun."
