CBS: SDSU Opens Season With Win Over Texas Southern

JACKSON, Miss. — Adam Bray pitched 6 1/3 strong innings and Eric Danforth tallied a pair of hits and drove in three runs to lead South Dakota State to an 11-1 victory over Texas Southern in the baseball season opener for both teams Friday afternoon.

The Jackrabbits and Texas Southern are scheduled to play again at noon Saturday. SDSU also will take on host Jackson State (Miss.) at 6 p.m. Saturday.

“I thought it was a very workmanlike effort on our part, especially to start the season with no errors and no walks by our pitchers,” SDSU head coach Dave Schrage said.

After a scoreless first inning, the Jackrabbits broke into the scoring column with two unearned runs in the top of the second. Jordan Varga opened the inning with a base hit and moved to second on a walk to AlRobbins. Varga was thrown out on a play at the plate for the second out of the inning before Robbins scored on an error. Aaron Machbitz scored the second run of the frame on the back end of a double steal with Reid Clary.

The Jackrabbits broke the game open in the third inning when Danforth delivered a bases-clearing, three-run triple to left-center field.

A junior right-hander, Bray was perfect the first timethrough the Tiger order. Texas Southern’s lone run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning as Robert Garza doubled, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a base hit by Samuel Terry.

SDSU came right back to score two runs in the fifth inning on a pair of run-scoring groundouts. Reid Clary doubled to lead off the sixth inning and later scored on a two-base passed ball to push the Jackrabbit advantage to 8-1.

Machbitz doubled in the first run of a three-run seventh inning and Cody Sharrow added a run-scoring single after another run scored on a passed ball.

Bray struck out six and scattered three hits en route to the victory. Tyler Shannon and Andrew Clemen combined for 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. The Jackrabbits also played errorless defense.

Varga and Danforth led the Jackrabbits’ 11-hit attack with two hits each. Robbins scored three times.

Garza and Terry accounted for all the Texas Southern offense with two hits apiece.

NOTES: The Jackrabbits won their season opener for thesecond consecutive year … the win was career victory No. 650 for Schrage, who is in his 26th season as a collegiate head coach … Friday’s game marked the first-ever meeting between SDSU and Texas Southern in baseball … Bray improved to 11-5 in his Jackrabbit career … junior college transfer Chris Anderson is scheduled to pitch Saturday’s first game, with Chad Hodges slated to start the night game
