SIOUX FALLS, SD -

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana gave its fans quite the offensive show in its home opener of 2014, scoring a season-high 16 runs in the victory against Northwestern (Iowa) on Monday at Karras Park home of Ronken Field. The Vikings defeated the Red Raiders 16-5, and improved their record to 8-6 this year, while Northwestern dropped to 17-4 with the loss.

Augustana really had the bats swinging on a beautiful Monday in March, getting a season high in hits and runs with 16 each.

The Vikings also were aggressive on the bases, tying a school record with eight stolen bases in the victory.

Cole Jenkins (2-1) picked up the win for the Vikings by going 2.0 innings, giving up just one run on two hits and walking one batter.

Augustana got a complete effort from its pitching staff, using five pitchers in total throughout the game. Michael Letkewicz continues to make his presence on the mound felt, striking out four batters tonight out the eight that the Waterloo, Iowa native faced on Monday night. Letwkewicz now has 22 strikeouts on the year in six apperances.

Alex Fink rebounded well after a rough performance his last time out, going 3 for 5 with a four RBI and two runs scored. The hits, RBI, and runs scored were all season highs for the sophomore.

Kye Winter got his first home run of the season with a two-run blast to right center field in the bottom of the seventh. Winter finished his night going 1 for 2 while driving two runs in and scoring three times for the Vikings.

Augustana jumped out to a 3-1 lead through the first three innings. The Vikings scored one run in each inning on a total of four hits, highlighted by a Fink single to right field with two outs that scored Jack Goihl from second base.

Augustana added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 5-1. Fink drove in Goihl again after the Springfield, Minn. native doubled down the left field line with one out to score Goihl. Jake Petersen drove in Fink two batters later on a bunt to third base.

The Vikings put this one out of reach in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five runs on four hits. Winter's first home run of the year was the big moment of the inning that started with Tony Viger's single through the left side of the field to lead off the inning. After a fly out by Goihl for the first out, Winter sent a bomb over the right center field wall for Augustana.

The Red Raiders scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it a six-run game at 10-4. Northwestern got its three runs on two hits.

The Vikings had another big inning in the bottom of the eighth, scoring six run to push their lead out to 12. Five different Augustana batters recorded an RBI in the inning.

The Red Raiders got one run in the top of the ninth to make it 16-5 in favor of the Vikings on a Skyler Wheeler single to right field with two outs that drove in Tony Schultz from third base. Derek Quame would get the final out of the inning by getting Davis Bloemendaal to ground out to third one batter later giving Augustana the win.
