CBB: Vikings Split With The Muleriders

Game One

The Vikings finished with seven hits in the game, but scored only one run.

Alex Fink went 2 for 4 for Augustana, scoring its lone run in the top of the fourth inning.

Gau (0-1) finished with five innings pitched, five strikeouts, giving up two earned runs on four hits against the Muleriders.

SAU was led by its starter Timothy Buchanan (1-0), who went seven strong innings, giving up just one run and striking out four.

Preston Gray earned his first save of year, pitching the last two inning, keeping the Vikings hitless during that stretch.

Southern Arkansas started quick, getting two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning.  The Muleriders got singles from Tyler Cameron and Jon Phillips.  A Zack Costa single brought both the runners in for the quick 2-0 lead.

Gau delivered a strong second inning, getting two of his five strikeouts in the game.  The Alexandria, S.D. native allowed only one runner on base but gave up no hits in the inning.

Tony Viger missed a scoring opportunity for Vikings in the top of the third inning, striking out to end the inning with a runner on second.  Zach Dibble singled to right field to start the inning, then advanced to second after a Josh Benson groundout resulted in the second out of the inning.  Timothy Buchanan then got his third punch-out of the day on Viger.

A Fink single to left field with one out got things going for Augustana in the fourth.  Kye Winter singled to left to put runners on the corners with one out.  After a Brian Duxbury walk loaded the bases for the Vikings, Marcus O'Neill would sac fly to left to score Fink and put the Vikings on the scoreboard, trailing 2-1 to SAU in the top of the fourth.

Gau ended his solid day on the mound, earning his fifth strikeout of the game in the bottom of the fifth.  The senior finished up his afternoon with five innings pitched, giving up just two runs on four hits, while striking out five batters.

Solid pitching by Buchanan in the top of the seventh ended a Viking opportunity after O'Neill singled to right field with two outs.  Dibble grounded out to end the inning, keeping the Muleriders ahead 2-1 through the top of the seventh.

Jack Goihl made a huge play for Augustana late, throwing out the SAU runner trying to steal second to end the bottom of the eighth after Southern Arkansas had gotten runners on the corners with two outs that started with a Jackson McCurdy single to left center on a 1-o pitch, keeping the score at 2-1 in favor for the Muleriders going into the ninth.

The Vikings' final inning at the plate didn't generate anything as Augustana went three up, three down to end the game after Winter struck out looking to seal the game, giving SAU the 2-1 win.

Game Two

Augustana got things going right out the gate in game two, with Jake Petersen getting on base after a bunt on 1-1 pitch with no outs.  Petersen would advance to second after O'Neill grounded out to first base for the first out.  Petersen would steal third, then score on a wild pitch by Yumezo Densaki to Viger, putting the Vikings up 1-0 at the end of the top of the first.

SAU answered back in the bottom of the first, tying the game at one all on a double by Carver Rademacher that scored Cameron from first base.  Josh Benson

Augustana kept things rolling in the top of the second, taking a 2-1 lead after Brendan Koistinen tripled to left field with one out, scoring Goihl from second after he singled to third base to start the inning.

Viger crushed a 1-0 Densaki pitch with one out in the third for his first homerun in 2014, putting the Vikings up 3-1 in the top of the third.  For Viger, it was the sixth blast of his career.
Hamilton put together a fine third inning, getting a 1-2-3 inning against Southern Arkansas, fanning two of the Muleriders the Spearfish, S.D. native faced.

Blake Sullivan recorded his fifth strikeout to end the top of the fifth in his relief appearance.  Sullivan got Viger on a full count with two outs and nobody on base for Augustana, keeping the Vikings lead at 3-1 against Southern Arkansas.

Some nice field work by the Vikings' infield in the bottom of the sixth eliminated a potential score for the Muleriders.  SAU's Jake Buchanan got to first after being hit by a pitch from Hamilton with no outs.  Augustana turned its first double play of the year on the on a ground ball fielded by Dibble, tagging second base then tossing to first for the two-out play.  William Townsend would ground out to third to end the inning, keeping the 3-1 lead intact for the Vikings.

Augustana would get another two runs in the top of the sixth inning.  A fielding error by the Muleriders scored Fink from second base.  A Benson single scored Alex Beals from third, giving the Vikings a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Matt Musser would come for relief of Hamilton to start the bottom of the sixth.  Musser would get a ground out, then then give up a hit before being replaced by Michael Letkewicz.  Letkewicz got the final two outs of the inning via strikeout against Southern Arkansas' hitters.

SAU never got another scoring chance after that, as Letkewicz struck out the side to end the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving the Augustana a 5-1 win and its first victory of the year.
