CBB: SDSU Tops Dakota State 11-1

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Eleven different South Dakota State players recorded at least one hit as the Jackrabbit baseball team posted an 11-1 non-conference victory over Dakota State Wednesday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
The Jackrabbits, who tallied 16 hits in the game, won for the fifth time in six games and improved to 21-18 overall. Dakota State dropped to 19-24 on the season.
SDSU got out of the gates quickly, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Machbitz that scored Scott Splett, who led off the game with a double. Zach Coppola built the Jackrabbit lead to 3-0 in the second on a two-run, two-out double.
The SDSU lead grew to 5-0 on a Paul Jacobson RBI single in the fifth, before Dakota State scored its lone run of the game in the top of the sixth on a bases-loaded walk to Nathan Wieneke.
The Jackrabbits answered with the long ball in the home half of the sixth to build a 9-1 lead. Cody Sharrow, who was 2-for-3 and scored three runs, led off the frame with a solo home run to left. Machbitz followed later in the inning with his seventh homer of the season, a three-run shot that gave him four runs batted in on the afternoon.
Four consecutive singles, including three by pinch-hitters, started a two-run seventh inning for SDSU. Patrick Korman plated both runs with his single through the left side.
Coppola led the Jackrabbits by going 3-for-3. Splett doubled twice and his replacement, Michael Finocchiaro added a pair of hits in his two trips to the plate.
Austin Kost, Ryan Froom and Derringer Huff each worked two innings on the mound, with Kost credited with the victory in his first collegiate start after striking out three and walking two. Five other Jackrabbit pitchers saw mound duty.
Nick Serrata, Ian Barker and Brookings native Andy Lee each tallied two of Dakota State’s seven hits.
Nine different pitchers saw action for the Trojans.
SDSU continues non-conference action with a three-game weekend series at Iowa. First pitch for Friday’s series opener is set for 6 p.m. at Duane Banks Field in Iowa City.
