CBB: Jacks Fall 2-1

CBB: Jacks Fall 2-1
JACKSON, MS -

Jackson State scored twice in the fifth inning and Desmond Russell made the lead stand up with a complete-game pitching performance as the Tigers recorded a 2-1 victory over South Dakota State in college baseball action Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Jackson State improved to 3-1. SDSU dropped to 2-2.

The Jackrabbits broke into the scoring column first, plating a run in the top of the fourth inning. Jake Ratz walked to lead off the frame and moved to third base on a double by Eric Danforth – the Jackrabbits’ first hit of the game. Ratz scored the lone Jackrabbit run on a play at the plate in which the ball was dropped by the catcher.

Jackson State grabbed the lead with two runs in the home half of the fifth inning against SDSU starter Kolton Emery. Sam Campbell led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by Stephen Curtis. Campbell scored the tying run on a groundout, and Curtis came home with the go-ahead run on a base hit off the bat of Bryce Taylor.

SDSU threatened to tie the game in the top of the seventh as Machbitz opened the inning with a double. However, Russell retired the next three Jacrkabbit hitters in order to preserve the Jackson State lead.

Russell  scattered four hits, walked three and struck out seven en route to the victory.

Emery allowed five hits, walked one and struck out one in a losing effort for the Jackrabbits. Freshman Ethan Kenkel pitched two hitless and scoreless innings in his collegiate debut, and Andrew Clemen retired the side in order in the eighth.

Al Robbins led all players with two hits for SDSU.

The Jackrabbits return to action Feb. 21-23 with a four-game series at Alabama A&M.
