CBB: Cougars Split Twin Bill In Wayne

CBB: Cougars Split Twin Bill In Wayne
WAYNE, NE -

Anthony Lopez scored on an error in the top of the eighth to give the University of Sioux Falls baseball team a 5-4 win and capture the back end of a double-header against versus Wayne State College on Sunday afternoon in Wayne, Neb.

The Cougars (14-11, 8-4 NSIC) were shutout 3-0 in the opener by the Wildcats (13-11, 6-4 NSIC).

Game One

Derek Fischer notched three strikeouts in the first two frames before Wayne State did all of its damage in the bottom of the third inning. After a lead-off walk and sacrifice put .235 hitter Alex Kreft at second, C.J. Nolen doubled him home and the Wildcats tagged Fischer for a pair of RBI singles to lead 3-0.

Fischer (4-2) threw well enough to get a win, but got no run support from the Cougars’ bats. He lasted four innings, walked three, struck out four, and allowed three runs on five hits. Kevin Handt and Dylan Rock combined to toss two innings of scoreless relief.

The Cougars scattered just three hits and never really threatened the Wildcats. Ryan Fobes led the USF with two hits while Durkin singled to extend his hitting streak to 11 straight games. USF had no extra base hits and posted nine strikeouts.

Game Two

With USF trailing 1-0 in the top of the third, Brandon Truesdell led off with a single and darted to third when Wayne State’s backstop mishandled Jordan Jeske’s sacrifice bunt.  Noah Durkin then walked on four pitches to load the bases. Two batters later, Ryan Fobes came to bat with the bases loaded and one out, watched a run score on a passed ball and then moved the Cougars in front 2-1 with an RBI groundout to short.

In the top of the fifth, Jeske coaxed an eight-pitch walk and would advance all the way to third on a throwing error by WSC senior right-hander Matt Russell. Jeremy Varner singled home Jeske before Fobes hits a triple down the left field line to drive in Varner and make it a 4-1 game.

After giving up back-to-back doubles that scored the Wildcats’ first run, USF senior lefty Noah Coleman breezed through the next four frames before running into a trouble spot in the fifth, walking Nick McIntee to lead off the frame before Wayne State sandwiched outfield singles around a sacrifice to cut their deficit to 4-2. Coleman then induced a one-out grounder to the mound but a two-run single by C.J. Nolen tied the game at 4-all.

With Wildcats on the corners with one out in the sixth, the advancing runner was wiped out at the plate by a fielder’s choice before junior Henry Ojeda took the mound for the Cougars and whiffed the final batter to end the inning.

Lopez smacked a line drive single to left to lead off the eighth inning. He went to second on a wild pitch and came around to score when the Wildcats’ second baseman badly misjudged a ground ball off the bat of Jordan Jeske.

Ojeda held the Wayne State side to one hit the rest of the way to preserve the Sunday split for USF.

Ojeda (4-3) gave up just one hit in 3-plus innings on relief, fanned three and walked none to earn the win. Coleman went five and two-thirds and allowed four runs on seven hits. He walked two and racked up five strikeouts.

USF recorded seven hits, with Varner and Fobes leading the charge with identical 2-for-5 efforts. Fobes drove in two, while Varner had one RBI and scored a run.

USF and Wayne State will wrap up the four-game series tomorrow with a twinbill slated to begin at 12 p.m.
