CBB: Augustana Sweeps Minnesota-Duluth

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana baseball and Head coach Tim Huber used some great hitting on Saturday to make history, while picking up two wins against Minnesota Duluth in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Vikings improved their record to 24-10 (14-4 NSIC) with the wins. The Bulldogs dropped to 7-17 (3-11 NSIC) with the losses.
Augustana took game one 6-2 in seven innings. The victory gave Huber his 184th career win with the Vikings, making him the all-time wins leader in Augustana baseball coaching history, surpassing Scott Timmer who set the mark back in 1997.
The Vikings came out swinging to begin game two, using a six-run inning in the top of the first to set the tone in a 15-3 win in seven innings.

Game One
Alex Fink led the charge for Augustana in game one with a 3-for-4 performance. For Fink, it was the sophomore first basemen's fifth game this year of three-or-more hits in a ballgame. The Springfield, Minn. native also had three RBI in the victory on his second homerun of the year in the top of the third inning.
Tony Viger ripped his 18th double of the season in the contest, second most in the nation, as part of a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Viger also drove in two runs for the Vikings.
Tyson Gau (5-2) notched his second complete game of the year for Augustana. Gau went all seven innings and gave up two runs on 10 hits. The senior also struck out three batters in the game.
A highly-contested game was broken open with a Fink three-run jack in the top of the third inning. Fink turned on a 0-1 pitch and sent it over the wall and into the scoreboard in right center, giving the Vikings a 4-0 lead.
UMD got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the half of the third to make it 4-1. Cody Aasen singled up the middle to drive in former NSIC Newcomer of the Year Alex Wojciechowski in from second base.
Minnesota Duluth cut it to a two-run game in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Jimmy Heck single to center field that brought in Brian Pierce to make it 4-2 in favor of Augustana.
The Vikings put this game out of reach with two runs in the top of the seventh. Viger singled to left field to score Jake Petersen and make it 5-2. Jack Goihl's sac fly to center field brought in Marcus O'Neill and pushed the scored to 6-2.
Gau hold the lead in the bottom half of the seventh to secure the win, striking out two of the first three batters he faced and getting a pop out to left field for the 6-2 victory.

Game Two
Augustana had a season-high 18 hits in just seven innings in a 15-3 win in game two. The win pushed the Vikings winning streak to four.
Kye Winter had a season-high five RBI and three runs scored as part of a 3-for-4 outing at the plate for Augustana.
Fink had his second straight three RBI game, going 2 for 3 in the box.
Petersen upped his hitting streak to 15 games after going 2 for 4. The Blair, Neb. native also drove in a run and scored two for the Vikings.
Viger chipped in with a 2-for-5 performance with one RBI and one run scored. The senior for Sioux Falls, smacked his 19th double of the year in the win.
Bennett Johnson (4-2) picked up the victory, tossing five innings and giving up three runs on four hits. The senior also fanned three Bulldogs in the contest.
Augustana jumped out early in this with a barrage of hits in the top of the first to lead 6-0 against UMD. The Vikings' first six batters all recorded hits before Brian Duxbury struck out for the first out. Four of the first six hits went for extra bases, highlighted by Petersen's leadoff triple to right center to start things off. A RBI-single to left center by Jacob James that scored Winter capped off the big six-run inning by Augustana to open the game.
Minnesota Duluth closed to it a four-run game at 7-3 in the bottom of the third after a Heck groundout to short scored Pierce from third base. The Bulldogs never got any closer after that.
Vikings tacked on three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning to make it 10-3 Augustana. Winter and Duxbury gave the fans at Karras Park a treat with back-to-back homeruns to start off the inning. Brendan Koistinen continued his recent hot streak at the plate with a double to left center that drove in James from second base that pushed the Viking lead to seven.
Augustana got five runs in the top of the seventh to make it 15-3. The Vikings got their five runs on four hits that was highlighted by Winter's three-RBI bases-clearing double to center field, giving the senior from Willow Lake, S.D. five RBI in the ballgame.
Chad Becker came in for relief in the bottom half of the seventh inning, and made quick work of Minnesota Duluth. Becker retired the side giving the Augustana the win.
The Vikings return to action to complete the four-game series with the Bulldogs on Sunday with another doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field.
