Carjacking Victim: 'I Remember Him Pounding My Face'

Carjacking Victim: 'I Remember Him Pounding My Face'
Leslie Larsen

SIOUX FALLS, SD -

It's painful just to look at Leslie Larsen's injuries.

"I have neck injuries, and he broke my eye socket, and my nose and my wrist," Larsen said in her central Sioux Falls apartment Monday.

Larsen suffers from a leg infection and was on her way home from the emergency room Sunday night when her friends stopped at the Freedom gas station on Minnesota Avenue to pick up some snacks and something to drink. That’s when Larsen was caught in the middle of a carjacking.

"I remember being in the back seat and the next thing I remember, I remember the back of the knife he had, it was brown, and I remember him pounding it in my face and on my eye," Larsen said.

Police say 36-year-old Jeremy Albers of Hills, Minnesota, ran up to the Ford Explorer Larsen was riding in, stole it at knife point, and then assaulted Larsen, who was in the backseat and couldn't get out.

Albers allegedly stole the SUV while he was running away from a crash he had just caused a few blocks away at 26th Street and Minnesota Avenue where he ran a red light and crashed into a pick-up truck.

After Albers assaulted Larsen and stole the SUV, he nearly hit several police officers who were closing in on him. That's when he sped into the Vern Eide car lot across the street and crashed into a fence.

It all happened shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday.

"He basically just went east from 24th and Minnesota through the Vern Eide lot, hit that car, kept going east through their fence and on the other side of Minnesota is Dakota and that's where the Explorer was disabled," Clemens said.

Larsen was in the SUV the entire time.

"I don't understand. I don't know who he was. I don't know what he even looks like. I just remember the ambulance taking me out of the car and I remember looking over off the stretcher and seeing the car totaled and the air bags open," Larsen said.

Police say Albers ran from the scene and was found in a garage a few blocks away.

And despite the injuries she suffered Sunday night, Larsen hopes Albers can find the help he needs for whatever issues he's facing.

"I think he's got something going on that he didn't know how to handle and then he added alcohol to it.  Just get help. Get help,” Larsen said.

Albers is facing charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault, grand theft auto and two DWIs for driving two different vehicles under the influence. His bond has been set at a half million dollars.

You can make donations to a fund for Larsen set up at One American Bank, 515 S Minnesota Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57106
