Aberdeen's next police chief will come from within the ranks of the department.
Capt. Dave McNeil has been promoted to the job, effective Sept. 15. He'll replace Chief Don Lanpher Jr., who is retiring after 10 years in the position.
McNeil was chosen after a nationwide search. He beat out other finalists from Texas, Colorado, New Mexico and South Dakota.
McNeil has been with the Aberdeen Police Department for 22 years, 15 years of which he has spent in a supervisory or management position.
