Canton Resident: 'It Just Kept Coming And Coming'

Canton Resident: 'It Just Kept Coming And Coming'
CANTON, SD -

Officials say 8.5 inches of rain soaked the Lincoln County city of Canton Monday night. Residents spent the day Tuesday drying out and assessing the damage that was left behind.

“Just kind of nerve-wracking watching the river just come up," Evan Hilt said about watching the water rise around his home.

As the rain kept falling Monday night, the creek kept rising. Kristin Hilt says in her family’s 18 years living just north of Canton, they've seen high water before just not as high as it was Monday night.

"We've sandbagged before but never had a drop in the house. It's just a matter of where the water falls first and at this point in time, it fell in Lincoln County and so it came up quickly," Kristin Hilt said.

"It just kept coming and coming and you think it would stop. You were hoping it would but you can't really do anything about it either," Evan Hilt said.

The rain came so heavy, and Beaver Creek started rising so fast, that it came up onto the Hilts' patio and eventually made its way inside the home.

"The upper level of the home is safe but the lower level where the main living area is is probably going to be pretty much destroyed," Kristin Hilt said.

There is mud covering the floor in the dining room and living room of the home. Down in the lower level the carpet is soaked.

As the Hilts were moving their belongings out of the water outside to their patio, a tiny deer decided even the Hilts' flooded home was a safe spot to escape the rising water.

"We heard a noise and it was this little baby deer and he kind of took off and then pretty soon we could hear him crying again for his mom," Hilt said.

The fawn was swimming in the flood water but spent the night on the Hilt's deck.

It's a reminder that even though their home was damaged, they are fortunate to have made it through the flood.

"There's always someone who has it worse," Kristin Hilt said.

And the Hilts hope the worst of their damage is behind them.
