Canton Battles Against The Tide

CANTON, SD -

After it rained almost nine inches in Canton last night, the water had nowhere to go. Now Beaver Creek and the Big Sioux River have risen into homes and businesses. Even a partially finished bridge has washed away.

As flood waters rose in town, Canton was almost inaccessable by land. Boats were needed to reach Canton this morning, rescue crews said. Several people were evacuated by boat from Canton today.

Before yesterday's storm, crews were busy working on a new bridge on North Bridge Street. As the waters rose, equipment and parts of the bridge itself were taken with the flowing current. According to a homeowner, Game Fishs and Parks had to launch a boat to rescue bridge workers trapped in their equipment.

Ben Dunsmoor is in Canton talking with residents about flooding. Tune into KELOLAND News at 5, 6 and 10 for more flood coverage and continue to check KELOLAND.com.
