Veteran pitcher Kyle Ruwe will be back on the mound at Sioux Falls Stadium this summer.
The right-hander who led the Sioux Falls Canaries last year in wins while setting a club and league record for innings pitched returns for his third season in Sioux Falls, manager Steve Shirley announced on Wednesday.
“We’re thrilled to have Kyle back for another season,” Shirley said of the Sunrise, Fla., native. “His ability to go deep into a game and composure on the mound consistently gives us a chance to win ballgames.”
Ruwe, 30, went 11-7 with a 3.71 ERA in 2013, good for second in the American Association in wins. Along with teammate Ben Moore, he logged 155 1/3 innings pitched to set a new league and club record. He threw three complete games, tied for second in the league, and he worked seven or more innings in 12 of his 22 starts. His campaign was highlighted by a 4-0 July with a 2.44 ERA and a league Pitcher of the Week honor for July 8-14.
This season will be Ruwe’s third in Sioux Falls. As a member of the Pheasants 2011 starting rotation, Ruwe went 4-5 with a 4.62 ERA in 16 starts. He spent part of 2012 with the St. Paul Saints before the Canaries re-acquired him prior to the 2013 season.
Ruwe enters his 10th season of professional baseball, all in the independent ranks. The right-hander has amassed impressive career numbers with a 71-47 record and a lifetime 4.45 ERA. He has a career strikeout-to-walk ratio over 2:1 with 465 strikeouts. He spent his first three seasons with the Lincoln Saltdogs, appearing primarily as a reliever. He worked exclusively as a starter in the last five seasons.
The Canaries’ 2014 campaign follows their highest attended season ever. It will be their 22nd season and ninth as members of the independent American Association. For more information about business partnerships or season tickets in 2014, call the Canaries at (605) 336-6060.
