Businesses Collect Food For Hurricane Victims

Businesses Collect Food For Hurricane Victims
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Boxes and cans could mean the world to those still struggling with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.  Thousands of pounds of food have been collected so far at Parker Transfer and Storage in Sioux Falls.

"It's a world turned upside down there.  As you've seen on the news, there's no power in a lot of areas. There's no gasoline and no gas to homes, so there's a lot of uncertainty right now," Matt Parker said.

One thing is certain, those people need to eat. That's what inspired Parker Storage, Zandbroz and North Western Warehouse to start collecting food.

Come Saturday, the food collected in Sioux Falls will be added to donations from Rapid City.  The goal is to then send 40,000 pounds of much needed relief to the northeast.

"It goes right to New Jersey for a station with the Red Cross and at the Salvation where it will be loaded on other trucks and brought into the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy," Parker said.

Hurricane Sandy may have hit thousands of miles away from KELOLAND, but those behind this food drive say this is when the people of the Midwest are at its best.

"It's fantastic that we recognize people in a tough situation and we give of ourselves, we give from our pocket books and we give from our hearts," Parker said.

And after this weekend's shipment, the generosity of South Dakotans will be apparent and helping those far, far away.

If you would like to donate food, simply drop off your items at Parker Transfer and Storage located at 1700 North F Avenue in Sioux Falls.  You can do so from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

Any donations that come in after Saturday's shipment will be collected and sent later.
