Burial Mound Surveys Planned In Northeast SD

April 28, 2014, 7:49 AM

PIERRE, SD -

Officials this summer plan surveys in six northeastern South Dakota counties to verify American Indian burial mound sites and determine if others exist that have not been recorded.

The South Dakota State Historical Society's Historic Preservation Office has hired contractors to do the work. Office Director Ted Spencer says that workers will ensure their work does not disturb the sites.

The work is planned in Brown, McPherson, Edmunds, Faulk, Marshall and Day counties. Officials believe there are at least 78 burial mound sites in the region.

Historical Society archaeologist Amy Rubingh says the burial mound sites are believed to have ties to the Sioux tribe and also to the Three Affiliated Tribes - the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara.
