The South Dakota Deputy Commissioner of School and Public Lands has announced he will run for the officer of Commissioner of School and Public Lands.
Nisland, South Dakota native Ryan Brunner said Monday that he has formally launched his campaign to be the Republican candidate in the 2014 election for the position.
Brunner was appointed Deputy Commissioner of School and Public Lands last year by then Commissioner Jarrod Johnson.
Brunner says he has been attending Republican dinners, picnics and other functions for the last six-months and building a network to launch his campaign.
Commissioner Johnson resigned from office August 15 and Gov. Dennis Daugaard appointed former state treasurer and state auditor Vern Larson of Vivian to replace Johnson as head of the agency that administers state lands set aside to support schools and other state institutions. Johnson resigned for family reasons.
Larson will serve out the remainder of the term, which ends in January 2015, but he won't be a candidate for the office next year.
