An eighth-grade Brookings boy made it through 30 rounds of spelling that ended when he got "reprehensible" correct to win a regional spelling bee.
Antonio Lansang of George S. Mickelson Middle School won the University of South Dakota Scripps Spelling Bee over the weekend.
He qualified for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May. He also received a Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary
Lansang qualified to the South Dakota bee after participating in the Sioux Falls regional competition during the winter.
Lansang on Saturday outlasted eighth grader Adele Benoit of Yankton and his sister, Angela Lansang, a sixth grader from George S. Mickelson Middle School.
Benoit of Sacred Heart Middle School was the runner-up. Anglea Lansang won third place.
