Brockett, RailCats Top Canaries 9-3

Sioux Falls, SD-- For the second straight night the Gary Southshore RailCats tagged the Sioux Falls Canary pitchers early and often as they coasted to a 9-3 victory at the Birdcage Wednesday night.  Gary Southshore threw up seven runs in the first four innings, including six earned on Sioux Falls starting pitcher Matt Wickswat (2-2).  The Canary bats had difficulty keeping up thanks to a solid performance from RailCat starting pitcher Stephen Hiscock, who permitted three earned runs while striking out six through seven innings to reward his team their second win of the four-game series.

“We as a team have to be completely dissatisfied with what’s happened the last two nights,” said manager Steve Shirley.  “We were kind of creeping our way back into this thing and we haven’t done anything in the last two nights well enough to win.”

The damage began in the second inning when a three-run home run from RailCat shortstop Ryan Brockett rewarded the road team a quick 3-0 cushion. A leadoff solo homer to left field from Chris Duffy sliced into the lead the very next half-inning to make it 3-1, but four more RailCat runs over the next two innings would put the Canaries in a hole they couldn’t dig out of.  Another run thanks to a solo shot from RailCat left fielder Josh Romanski added to an already problematic 7-1 deficit.

Sioux Falls would bring together the closest thing to a rally in the bottom of the seventh when consecutive RBI singles from Ty Forney and Steve Tinoco cut the contest to 8-3. However, the RailCats sank the nails in the coffin the very next inning after a double by Wally Backman jumped the score back up to 9-3. The lead was more than enough Wednesday evening as Gary Southshore relief pitcher Ethan Gibbons allowed a lone hit and no runs through the final two innings to seal the W.

“We’re not consistent. We have runs and then we go flat,” said Shirley.  “We can’t afford these kinds of things.”

The Canaries will wrap up their four-game series with the RailCats tomorrow night at 7:05 PM at the Birdcage. It’s not only Thirsty Thursday but also American History Night, and fans can get $1 (12 oz.) beers until first pitch and $2.50 beers all game long. Tickets are available at the box office, by calling 605-336-6060 or via TicketMaster.
