With our drought getting no relief, we desperately need early winter moisture and with the jet stream divided around KELOLAND, moisture is eluding us.
A weak El Nino pattern is breaking down, meaning storms could come to our area earlier in the winter. Even one or two extra snow storms would begin to alleviate spring plant worries.
The best shot of above-average moisture is in the Appalachians this winter, but our chances are improving.
The months of December, January and February are historically dry. Pierre averages just over an inch-and-a-half of moisture during the winter months.
Our official forecast still calls for more moisture after the New Year with Arctic cold air continuing to push south.
