Brandt Lake Racers Heat Up The Ice

February 17, 2013, 10:34 PM

Brandt Lake Racers Heat Up The Ice
CHESTER, SD -

Whether you're a thrill seeker looking to rev your engine or just a spectator enjoying a day on the ice, Brandt Lake is the place for you. From 1989 to 1998 Rob Jones organized ice racing derbies. Now 15 years later he's at it again.

"I've got a friend that got me going again. The Sioux Valley Cycle club was having some problems getting their races going and people to show up. So all these racers got a hold of me and asked me if I would try to get it going again," said Jones.

And that he has. 20 years ago his races would averages around 200 competitors. This year they have only been racing a few weeks and are already over 100 drivers from age 5 to 50.

"My dad, he asked me when I was four years old if I wanted to race and I said yeah. After that I got use to it and wanted to race," said Owen Gottsch.

"I just turned 50 years old last week, now I'm riding in the over 40 class and loving life," said Rob Anderson.

People come from all over such as Canadian Blake Ehrich who raced here in the 90's and made the trip down memory lane to Chester, South Dakota.

"Let's face it, 21 years ago was the last time I was here. It's nice to see the young kids out racing and having fun instead of sitting in front of a computer, they get enough of that stuff," said Ehrich

The past drivers, now with kids of their own, get to get back on the saddle and make this a family outing.

"It's a good place to get the kids involved and it really creates a lot of bonding with the families. Your kids aren't sitting at home playing video games or running around with their friends. They come out here, they have friends here, but at the same time they're with their families and forms an opportunity to do something together," said Rich Schoeberl.

To race out here there is only one thing you need to know.

"If you're scared to crash then you pretty much shouldn't be riding out here... That's about it," said Gottsch.
