Brandon Boom Is Back

May 27, 2014, 10:10 PM by Angela Kennecke

Brandon Boom Is Back
BRANDON, SD -

It's got that small town feel with easy access to Sioux Falls.  That's what's attracted thousands of people to Brandon. At its high point, 100 new homes a year were being built there.  Then the recession hit and the construction slowed down, way down.  But now Brandon's boom is back.

From hammers to bulldozers, these are the sounds of the sleepy little community of Brandon waking up and growing bigger.

"I do like to see it.  I'm excited for it--I think it's good for Brandon, good for the community--good for the schools," Lisa Reinschmidt said.

Reinschmidt moved her family here nearly a decade ago because of the schools and its location.

"I love the small town feel, but also the ability to be close to Sioux Falls and have all of what we need," Reinschmidt said.

Access to Sioux Falls will soon get easier too and developers are planning for more growth because of the Highway 100 project, which will come through by 2018.

"And that's part of the excitement for the east side of Sioux Falls is the same excitement for the west side of Brandon. These two communities are coming together at Six-Mile Road," Steve Van Buskirk said.

Van Buskirk's company is currently preparing to build on 18 single-family home lots and has another 120 acres to go.

"We're working our way east. We've got land all the way up to the Big Sioux Recreational area," Van Buskirk said.

And once all those new rooftops are up, more commercial development is bound to follow.  The city expects more retail and restaurants to service all those people moving to town.

Land is already being developed along Holly Boulevard, one of Brandon's busiest streets.  Fastenal, an industry hardware distributor, and a Dollar General Store are both going in this summer.   But along with all this growth comes challenges.

"We're looking at a road management plan. We recently completed sewer and water studies that outline shortfalls in our current infrastructure that we need to address in the next five to 10 years," Brandon City Administrator Bryan Read said.

As Brandon works to stay ahead of its growth, developers are ready to keep the momentum going.

"It's its own community out here.  It's really more than a bedroom community--it's a town that happens to be really close to Sioux Falls," Van Buskirk said.

Brandon also has a couple of new apartment complexes going up.
