A well-known Sioux Falls physician is recovering and in good condition following his bone marrow transplant at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
After almost a decade of battling cancer, high dosages of chemotherapy left Dr. Tom Braithwaite in need of a bone marrow transplant. It was supposed to happen on November 14 at 10:30 p.m., but Tom's sister, Mindy, said there was a bit of a delay.
"(The stem cells) actually arrived about 11:30 p.m., went to the lab for final inspection and the transplant began about 1:30 a.m. today," Mindy Braithwaite said.
Mindy said the delay actually made the transplant even more special.
"Today would have been our Dad's 86th birthday and now here it is Tom's "re-birth" day!" Mindy said.
Tom is doing well and was able to eat breakfast. He could be released from the hospital Thursday afternoon or by Friday.
