Black Hills Visitors Warned Of Fire Restrictions

August 31, 2012, 6:19 AM by Derek Olson

Black Hills Visitors Warned Of Fire Restrictions
HILL CITY, SD -

Visitors come year round but Labor Day weekend is known as the last hurrah for summer tourism in the Black Hills.

Despite dry conditions and fire restrictions, the mood at the Rafter J Bar Campground outside of Hill City is one of optimism.  In fact, going into this weekend the camping facility is nearly booked, which means if you don't have a reservation you may have a difficult time finding a place to camp out here.

"We rely pretty heavily on our return guests.  We're lucky in that way, but having a campfire goes hand-in-hand with camping," said Paul Johnson.

Those who plan to visit the Black Hills need to be mindful of the fire restrictions in place.

First, campfires are off limits.  It is just way too hot and dry out here to do that safely.

Charcoal grills are also banned.  You'll be asked to leave those at home.

And if you smoke, there areas of the Hills where that's just not allowed because it's way too hot and dry out here to do that safely.
