Bitter Cold On The Way

January 16, 2013, 6:15 PM by Scot Mundt

Bitter Cold On The Way

Despite thick clouds, many in KELOLAND enjoyed highs in the 30s and 40s on Wednesday.

While temperatures will be cooler on Thursday, many will remain above average. It will be a different tune come early next week, that's when the coldest air of the season will arrive on your doorstep.

Before the core of the cold moves in, temperatures will start to fall this weekend. Along with the push of cold air, light snow showers will be possible on Sunday. Any amount of snow on the ground will only help temperatures get colder.

As of now, Monday will be the coldest afternoon and either Monday morning or Tuesday morning will have the coldest lows.

During the third week of January, with at least a trace to an inch of snow on the ground, the coldest high temperature Sioux Falls has experienced is five degrees. So far, that's our going high. The coldest lows range from -12 to as much as -23. Our forecast lows are at -12 for both mornings.

Of course, these numbers can change, but we should easily beat our coldest low this season of -7 from early December.
