An already red-hot battle between the oil industry and biofuel supporters just got turned up another notch. A new ad campaign launched this week fires back at an oil industry supported commercial.
The ad paid for by the American Petroleum Institute started running in July. It slammed the ethanol industry and made claims that fuels including ethanol blends would damage your car.
"And this is really about market share and that the oil industry is pulling out all the stops and spending a lot of money to really misguide and mislead the American public," POET CEO Jeff Lautt said.
In response, the new ad paid for by Growth Energy started running this week. The ad features a ventriloquist act and encourages viewers to contact Congress to support of the Renewable Fuel Standard.
"This ad campaign is an example of us hitting back and making sure, whether it is member of Congress or the general public to know, don't be fooled. Use your common sense. This is really about them protecting their market share, profits and high gas prices," Lautt said.
The new ad will be shown locally and also throughout the region. There are also plans to show the ad all across the nation.
Lautt says that the biofuels industry now has ten percent of the market and that number could reach as high as 20. That's why, he says, the oil industry launched the first ad.
“It's a bit of a David/Goliath. We are the first alternative to their product in really the history of this country, so we're going to defend that," Lautt said.
AAA also responded to the original ad saying the organization supports the use of ethanol and the biofuels industry.
