Bill Looks At Deer vs. Car Crashes

February 5, 2013, 8:27 AM by Austin Hoffman

Bill Looks At Deer vs. Car Crashes
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

State Farm estimates that deer versus car crashes increased nearly eight percent last year. Many times, those deer end up in a ditch, seriously injured.

A bill in Pierre hopes to keep a wounded deer from suffering.

1.23 million.  That's how many crashes State Farm says were caused by deer from July 2011 to June 2012. According to their numbers, South Dakota residents are the second most likely in the country to hit a deer.

If you hit a deer now and it’s in the ditch, injured but not dead, by law you have to call a game warden or animal control officer to come euthanize it.

In some areas of South Dakota that could mean a very long wait.

House Bill 1144 would give anyone who comes upon a deer seriously injured in by a car the right to euthanize it humanely.

According to the bill, it's all in an effort to keep the deer from needlessly suffering.
