Big Population Gain In Springfield Is A Con
February 21, 2011, 6:13 AM
SPRINGFIELD, SD -
The southeastern South Dakota town of Springfield can boast of a 151 percent population gain in the 2010 Census. On paper, anyway.
The 2000 Census counted 792 residents in Springfield. That number jumped to 1,989 in the new Census. But the town's assistant finance officer said the new Census included some 1,100 inmates housed at the Springfield state prison.
Ashlea Pruss says that the town's population "hasn't really changed at all."
