Big Lots A Big Deal For 'Meadows' Area

SIOUX FALLS, SD -
A new business has announced it's moving into an empty storefront on a prime piece of Sioux Falls property.
Big Lots will take over the building that used to be Linens 'N Things. The store is already in 47 states, and Big Lots can now add South Dakota to that list. The franchise will be located in Sioux Falls' "Meadows on the River" development near I-29 and 26th Street. The area saw several stores leave as a result of the economy in 2008.
Linens 'N Things moved out in December of '08, but only recently have other businesses taken notice of the building and its location.
"We've had a lot of interest in the space, a lot of national tours here," Raquel Blount with Lloyd Companies said.
Blount calls Big Lots a "general merchandiser," selling a wide range of items at a discount. The store will take over all 28,000 square feet of space and should open in time for the holidays.
"This really is an indicator that the Sioux Falls market is a vibrant, strong retail economy," Blount said.
And it's not just Big Lots coming to that side of town. Several businesses that have been empty for awhile are getting new storefronts.
"We have Pearle Vision taking over the Executive Fireplace location, Beds by Design is going in Hollywood Video, Hom Furniture is taking the Sportsman's Warehouse," Blount said.
Other businesses, such as nearby Dress Barn, are sure to see more customers too.
"With Big Lots coming in, people will be coming to see their store, then it'll bring them to all the stores here too,” Deanna Sperle, assistant manager at Dress Barn, said. “It will not only benefit Dress Barn but all other stores in this spot too."
And it's not just the Meadows on the River area that's enjoying some new growth. Last April, the vacancy rate for retail spaces was near six percent, but Blount now says it's back down to four percent.
