Being Safe On The Road

July 17, 2014, 6:04 PM by Brady Mallory

Being Safe On The Road

There are a lot of factors drivers have to consider when behind the wheel. One of them is watching where the traffic is coming from when you're pulling out onto the road. A fatal SUV versus bicycle crash, which authorities say is just an accident, is a reminder of the importance of safety.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue is usually a first responder for crashes and other accidents. Division Chief Brad Goodroad said being safe is as simple as being aware of your surroundings.

"Like I always tell my kids, you look both ways twice. So, you're looking right, look left. Before you move again, both ways again," Brad Goodroad, SFFR, said.

Goodroad says this is true for drivers who are about to make a turn. He says it's common for many of us to just look at the traffic coming from our left, if we're turning right.

"You may have looked both directions when you pulled up to the intersection, or pulled up to leave the parking lot. As you're waiting for traffic to clear from the left, that's when the problems arise," Goodroad said.

This scenario is not limited to leaving a parking lot. Anything can happen, whether you are merging lanes, or turning a corner.

"People might be in a hurry to get somewhere. To get home from work, whatever their next event is they're going to.  Might be a little bit hasty.  Just watch out for that," Goodroad said.

As for people riding bikes, Goodroad says they, too, have to keep their eyes open for bigger vehicles on the road.

"You're on a very small vehicle, on a bike. Sometimes you're driving on the sidewalk or on the edge where they don't expect to see you," Goodroad said.
