BBB: Be Wary Of Alarm Salespersons

BBB: Be Wary Of Alarm Salespersons
With all the break-ins we've had lately in Sioux Falls, you might be tempted to buy a security alarm system.  But officials with the Better Business Bureau are warning residents to be leary of door to door salesmen and their high pressure sales tactics.

You see these signs every summer in neighborhoods throughout Sioux Falls advertising APX security alarms for your home.

Jacob Hill was approached by a man who was going door to door trying to convince people to buy one of the systems.

"He was basically doing a trade off displaying their sign in your yard in exchange for a free alarm system, $1,600 worth of alarm equipment," Hill said.

At first, Hill thought it sounded like a good deal but then his alarm went off.

"It got to the point where he was talking about keeping the minimum required service agreement open, which was $12 a week.  So then the bells start going off then," Hill said.

Officials with the Better Business Bureau say if you are thinking about getting a security system, make sure you ask a lot of questions and don't be pressured into making a quick decision.

"Does the alarm go directly to the police department?  Does it go to a monitoring company?  Are they notified if it's tripped?" Jim David of the Better Business Bureau said.

APX is a legitimate company out of Utah and has a peddler's license for Sioux Falls, but doesn't have a good track record according to David.

"They've had 1600 complaints in the last three years," David said.

"My biggest concern once I found out they are not actually a local company that if I did get it installed would it work, number one.  And number two, if I would trust a company in my home installing everything and put them responsible for my family's safety," Hill said.

The Better Business Bureau gives APX a C- grade. Learn more about why APX got that grade online.
